Katacolon is a port town where our ship docked and it is the gateway to get to the ruins of Olympia, where the original Olympic games were held. It is about a 30 minute drive and we took a shuttle, booked directly with a company in Greece called Katacolon Express, for 20 Euros each.
Kronos Hill is considered to be the birth place of Zeus....the green covered hill in the backdrop of this picture.
This is the location of the gymnasium where the Olympians trained and lived. (Similar to todays Olympic village.)
Palestra was the wrestling school. They trained 'naked' except for a layer of olive oil and dust....
Bathtubs used to wash off their oil-dust coating. Also a health club where men gathered to chat.
This is the workshop of the great sculptor Pheidias who created the 40 foot statue of Zeus.
